Shhhh! Shabu shabu

Dogo adding meat to shabu shabu pot. Cooking the ingredients in the table and fishing them from the broth with your sticks is fun, but eating shabu shabu is unbelievable messy!

As you can see, there are two small dip cups in front of Dogo: first sesame seed sauce, then ponzu. Eventually the table in front of me seemed like a battle ground and I never drop anything when eating fajitas. :I

What I didn't know is that the waitress would bring another small course to cook in the same pot after these. It included a soft sponge-like cake of rice dough and noodles and she poured some broth over them.

Look at the notes in the picture for more information on what's what.

Only the tamago (egg omelette) was on a pale yellow plate at AUD2.60, and you had to order it. Too cheap to deserve a spot on the conveyor belt.

Crowds queuing up to half an hour to get a taste of the huge variety of sushi on offer at Makoto in World Square and in Chatswood. We wondered what the fuss was, and we waited 20 minutes for the privelage of squeezing in among mostly Asian and Caucasian diners perched on stools around the stage with several sushi chefs preparing little morsels. Our fears of this being a knock-off sushi joint run by Asians were assuaged by the waitresses callig orders to the sushi chefs in Japanese.

Back to the food. We grabbed several plates of sushi as they danced on the belt in front of us. Scallops, salmon, mackeral, pickled jellyfish with faux-sharkfin, all good. Sure, it's not the best sushi in the world, but when most dishes were AUD3.60, it's quite good value.

We also ordered a bubbling claypot of Nabeyaki Udon with thin slices of beef and a runny poached egg, and slippery smooth udon. A comforting ending to a nice sushi dinner.
