Once inside the boat's holding tank, this leopard shark will be measured and tagged. Sharks are an indicator species - if they're healthy, chances are that smaller animals farther down the food chain are doing well too. The information gathered in this shark tagging program may also provide a better picture of the behavior of San Francisco Bay sharks, as well as how they're affected by pesticides, PCBs, mercury and other toxic chemicals that pollute bay waters.

Listen to the companion KQED-FM Radio piece on KQED QUEST and discuss it in the QUEST Community Science Blog.

SHABU-SHABU

Here's a PART of our shabu-shabu dinner. As you can see, we have healthy and unhealthy stuff -- the vegetables and the processed foods (e.g. squidballs and kani).

The key to shabu-shabu, however, I didn't get a picture of. It's all in the sauces that you pop into the soup. Mmm, good! ... and spicy.

Have you met Rosemary?

A wise man named Giuseppe once said, "When in doubt, use Rosemary." I am assuming Giuseppe was a very important celebrity... like an Italian Gordon Ramsay; because Italian food isn't very Italian without a healthy infusion of Rosemary. We have all seen the little dried green leaf, which packs a punch in the flavo(u)r department... but have you ever met the prettier avatar? Explains the pretty name.

Bonus: Can you find an ant in the picture?
