made this little guy for dinner last night. i made another, but he was not as good & none of the photos turned out very well.

the head is made with medium grain rice (short grain will work well too - no long grain!) i then packed the rice into a frankenstein head-shaped cookie cutter that was coated lightly with olive oil. packing the rice in VERY TIGHTLY is key. it also helps to coat your hands well with oil while working to avoid getting sticky-rice hands!

pre-making the heads, then having pieces of veggies & other foods to decorate them with would be a fun activity for older kids, i imagine!

The funny parrot

The parrot loves to destroy cardboard structures. The larger, the better. Although she never went crazy on the toilet paper rolls, she did seem to enjoy having them around. So it was a great surprise when I found the parrot taking great interest in a tall cardboard box I moved next to her cage that was filled with about 20 of the rolls (collected over time). In less than 3 hours she had made her way through the whole stack, ripping it to shreds before sitting on the pile as I've captured here. Actually I only noticed when the activity ceased and out of concern I ran over and found the parrot likt this. She wouldn't respond to anything (I was a little scared) until I reached in to poke her, but she moved before I got that close. Then I grabbed my camera because I knew it was obvious she wasn't going to hide this time!

For the following days Siu Gut would long (from the first thing in the morning) to be let out just to head directly to her box (she didn't care for nuts or any scratchings - her two favourite things). She just wanted her box of shredded cardboard. She had this habit, of diving into the papers, like a duck dives under water for food, with her tail up at 90-degrees from the paper pile and her two feet kicking/swimming tossing paper bits in the air like popcorn!

Serious. It was so cute.

She was like those kids in the plastic ball pool.

What was even more crazy was that 2 days later after about 5 min of the standard kick-kick-scratch-scratch sounds followed by the toss up of confetti papers, then the activity ceased. So curious I went to check up on the parrot. All I saw was a pool of shredded cardboard. I called to the parrot. Nothing. So then I tapped on the box and was met with a little movement and a small grumble under the pile. The parrot had burried herself under the papers.

It's about 2 weeks in and the parrot is still doing this. I check on her every so often and take her outside of her castle (which I'm sure annoys her) but honestly, I can't imagine how it might be good to be burried under a pile of shredded papers.

What a funny parrot.

BACKSTORY: Great camping trip with Clint & Carolyn, Eli & Parthena, Dan & Erin, Evan, TwoBeans, and of course Oranjello & Lemonjello.

This trip was full of firsts! Things that happened that had never happened before! The 2nd gate (complete with bullet holes) was mysteriously open for the first time ever. We heard sirens for the first time ever. An ambulance skulked around for hours, and pulled up on the path by our campsite, making a 20-point U-turn. First time we ever saw a real vehicle on the road. Apparently someone had to be rescued this weekend. The ambulance created paranoia: When the moon rose, at least one member of our party was convinced that it was a spotlight. It was also TwoBeans's first time camping with us here. It was also the first time Evan arrived before we did; he couldn't find the site and went on a pleasant extended hike. It was the first time Clint had to turn down Eli's food, because he appetite was destroyed by ordering too much food at Sheetz and running late. It was the first time Evan came up with no stuff at all, as he had planned to go to his cabin. But didn't; other people volunteered an extra sleeping bag, so he slept in his car. He left rather suddenly, causing Clint to walk to the path yelling his name out wondernig where he'd went. It was the first time in a long time that we forgot to bring and set up our hammock.

Other than that, things were pretty normal. The moon was so full you could pee without a flashlight if you were so inclined. Cloud cover later made the stargazing not as good, but 5 out of 8 of us took a night walk down to Evan's car anyway. Despite the late-October date and forecast low of 49 degrees, it was actually warmer at night than many camping trips; Clint only wore 3 of his 7 layers -- UNLIKE at X-Day. We only saw one set of people riding horses. The creek was not running. Eli made awesome food. Last man standing was TwoBeans.
