I dined here with Kiki for the first time (yes, incredible, as I used to live around the corner for a while) the other day. I was so taken by the amazing interior (like a time warp) and the delicious food and service (our waiter has worked here since 1991 and the owner came our a couple of times to chat, share some history and make sure we were well sated) that I'm planning on my birthday supper here on the 10th. It has that old-school vibe that is becoming increasingly rare in Cape Town, as old buildings get ripped down and new, soulless restaurants take their place. If you're into a bit of a good 70's vibe in a relaxed yet sincere setting then I can highly recommend Mario's, even tho you most probably already know that!

Quote from the book in the restaurant pictured above: "Mario's opened in 1971 and has become a Cape Town institution that's been appreciated by generations of happy patrons (the signatures on its walls and ceiling testify to their numbers) and is still thriving today. It's founder, Mario Marzagalli, was as flamboyant as the Old Man Steak he made in front of diners at the table. A prime cut of beef fillet was sauteed and sauced, flamed and served with a flourish. Mario's wife, Pina, with her quiet charm and beautiful smile, saw to the homestyle dishes of her childhood: thick bean soup, homemade tagliolini with pesto, osso buco, quail with risotto and irresistible semifreddo." I think Beavis (background) is jealous that he isn't getting any.

Because of Carolyn's surgery, she postponed her birthday party thinking there was going to be a 2-month ordeal recovering. So Carolyn's birthday party became a belated birthday/St. Patrick's Day party.
