Crowds queuing up to half an hour to get a taste of the huge variety of sushi on offer at Makoto in World Square and in Chatswood. We wondered what the fuss was, and we waited 20 minutes for the privelage of squeezing in among mostly Asian and Caucasian diners perched on stools around the stage with several sushi chefs preparing little morsels. Our fears of this being a knock-off sushi joint run by Asians were assuaged by the waitresses callig orders to the sushi chefs in Japanese.

Back to the food. We grabbed several plates of sushi as they danced on the belt in front of us. Scallops, salmon, mackeral, pickled jellyfish with faux-sharkfin, all good. Sure, it's not the best sushi in the world, but when most dishes were AUD3.60, it's quite good value.

We also ordered a bubbling claypot of Nabeyaki Udon with thin slices of beef and a runny poached egg, and slippery smooth udon. A comforting ending to a nice sushi dinner.

Famous Mom

Here's an article from the Spokane Chronicle detailing your Spokane international food choices in 1985, featuring my mom (go mom!) in the lead picture:

Spokane Chronicle, 1 October 1985:

R & R INTERNATIONAL FOOD CENTER -- A customer's first impression of this store might be that it's just your basic corner grocery.

After a closer look, it's not hard to see the difference. Next to the standard TV dinners, shoppers will find Moo Shu pork wrappers and a half dozen types of egg roll wrappers.

There's a butcher counter where standard cuts of meat sit next to several varieties of tofu and, occasionally, fresh tuna, which is used for sushi and sashimi.

Susan Liu, who has run the market with her sister and brother-in-law for three years, carries products for all types of Oriental cooking whether it's Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, or Chinese.

She also has a number of customers from the Philippines. For them, she stocks several types of coconut milk used in the preparation of curries and fish sauce, which is used like soy sauce.

In addition to customers from the neighborhood and throughout Spokane, Liu has a regular clintele from Idaho and Montana. Some drive hundreds of miles to pick up sushi ingredients like maki (dried seaweed), pickled ginger and the green horseradish used as a condiment.

Liu knows most of her customers and will sometimes ask them what they're planning on cooking.

"Sometimes, I will remind them of the ingredients to get," said Liu, a native of Taiwan.

Along with essentials like sake, dried mushrooms, chili paste and hoisin sauce, R & R also stocks a variety of fresh produce including fresh bamboo shoots, Japanese eggplant and several types of Chinese greens.

R & R also carries Chinese and Japanese beer, as well as several types of sake and plum wine.

Located at E628 Ninth St, R & R is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

I couldn't pick a picture for today so there are two. This is the vegetable udon I had for lunch, from M2M supermarket in the East Village.

Not used to seeing a picture of each and every special roll. Makes the selection process easier but we didn't order them. NPY doesn't go for the novelty stuff and finds a lot of them too big to eat in one bite!
