BACKSTORY: Carolyn & Clint stayed an extra day just for the family dinner at Magnolia's on Thursday night. When we got to the place, someone said to spread out the families. One suggestion was to draw seat numbers from a hat to mix up the families, but that didn't happen. So, as it turned out, there was a lot of mixing up going on. We didn't have the banquet room this year, but Carolyn thinks that the rest of the upstairs was more conducive to mingling. It was easier to walk around the tables. However, there was also a lot of chaos with the ordering and serving of food. Mark said "They came over with a bottle of wine and asked if it was mine because they forgot which table ordered it. I said it was mine." People were already eating salad before others even got to order. So that part was confusing. I really feel for the waiters since not only did they have a large family to take care of, we were confusing them by walking around and not paying much attention.

I think Susan is doing a very good impression of Edvard Munch's The Scream here.

BACKSTORY: Susan had a birthday dinner. We came. We drank. We ate tacos. We left a bit early in order to watch our movie for the night before Carolyn's bedtime. And Susan got stiffed on the bill! (All eventually resolved.) It was a bit expensive, and the service that me & Carolyn got was actually quite bad -- but damn their chips & salsa were good!! All the food was good.

"I got LANCE in my pants"

I know it's almost impossible to read, but the back of this snack-food-delivery truck has a photo of a man's derrière, with one of those packages of peanut-butter crackers sticking out, along with the slogan "I got LANCE in my pants". (The snack company is called Lance Snack Foods.) Anyone else find this odd?

Posting this for Jess, because of her funny Yelp review of the South Bay Lee's Sandwiches chain. This particular sandwich is from Out the Door, The Slanted Door's little lunch counter in the Ferry Building. It's quite excellent, and uses the proper hard (not smooshy) French bread.

Happy Birthday To Ms. Sandy!

It's our BC leader's big day, and as a surprise we planed a huge surprise for Ms. G. We found out that chocolate is her vice, and so (noting our food group's chocolate tasting) I suggested we gather chocolates from all over for our combating chocoholic. So CA picked up a nice presentation box and left our group to scour the city (NA is going to bring some back from Nairobi; CM is going to send some out from Istanbul) for various chocolates from all over the world. I picked up some chocolates (including some Japanese chocolate cookies, some HK favourites, a couple Belgium and a bag of liquor truffles) to add to the stash, but what is a celebration without cake? I made 3 dozen cupcakes, and also a chocolate cake shaped (kind of/inspired by) like a bottle of wine (or something alcoholic) as a tribute to Ms. Sandy's common encouragement of participants to "keep up their guards, as it will burn more calories. Then you can have your wine or chocolate tonight." Well here Ms. Sandy can have her chocolate (cake) shaped like a wine bottle.

I know this is a pretty pitiful attempt (Ms. Smisch, I wish you could have saved me here!), but I hope she can kind of see what it is supposed to be. (Yes, I was also influenced by the ribbon/prop use that is found on so many cakes from Chinese bakeries. It's not edible, a no-no, I know.)
