This food stand was at the entrance to our hostel. It was sheer luck I was able to get a photo of it without hoards of people picking an choosing their snacks. Much of the food was sold on skewers. They would put the bought skewers in a shallow clear plastc bag with the end of the skewer sticking out. And folks would munch away down the street. The food sold so fast here you didn't have to worry about getting sick. One of the gals staying at our hostel told me they were just putting out a 10 gallon pot of fried noodles. I went down there immediatly and they were already sold out!

Pewter was used and valued by the Chinese long before it appeared in Europe. Pewter is an alloy of tin and lead. It is soft and can be easily shaped, engraved and stamped. In China, pewter was used for keeping water hot in kettles and serving food, wine and tea. During the 19th century, Yixing clay was added as an interior liner for pewter teapots.

Snuff bottles were used by the Chinese to contain powdered tobacco. Smoking tobacco was originally illegal in China, but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders.

It was common to offer a pinch of snuff as a way to greet friends and relatives. Snuff bottles soon became an object of beauty and a way to represent status. The highest status went to whoever had the rarest and finest snuff bottle.

So dad made up the gravy to stew the abalones after re-hydrating them. The stewing is done in a Chinese/Japanese style earthen-ware pot.

When I took this picture the abalones are almost ready to eat!

Aren't these cute? Janine got them for me for my birthday (in a cute box which I still have), they have little pictures printed on them, and gooey pink stuff inside... yum! They are all gone now though... :-(

In Japan, you can get bowls of noodles delivered, just like pizza. Actually, easier than pizza in most places. The springy contraption on the back grabs the bowls between trays, to seal them, and then allows them to swing around in response to the movement of the bike.
